What is a screw shaft?

The worm shaft consists of a tube or a solid rod connected to a wound spiral. The worm shaft spiral consists of divided worm coils. The most common ends of the shaft are journals on which bearings, couplings, geared motors etc. are mounted.
The main application of worm shafts is worm conveyors. A screw conveyor is a device used to transport loose materials by means of a screw shaft rotating inside the trough. The material can be moved horizontally, diagonally or vertically. Depending on the construction, screw conveyors are divided into tubular or trough-shaped conveyors - U-shaped. It is worth emphasizing that the worm shaft is also called a worm wheel or a screw shaft. The selection of the worm wheel is adjusted to the size of the screw conveyor and depends on its length and external diameter.

Basic data needed to produce a screw shaft:

  • L całk. - shaft length (with pivots)
  • L - pipe length
  • a, b - pivot dimensions
  • d – shaft diameter and wall thickness
  • D – diameter of screw blades
  • p – pitch
  • s – thickness of screw blades
  • number of blades and their direction

Steel used for screw shafts

The type of material used for the production of the shaft depends on the working conditions of the conveyor and the transported material. Most often it is structural steel, chromium-nickel steel, wear-resistant steel or plastic. Depending on the type of process and the material to be moved, the appropriate type, thickness and shape of the screw feathers mounted on the screw shaft are also selected. You can find more about the types of snail feathers on the subpage: http://www.helixsystem.pl/rodzaje-pior
